Semiotic Crime

National press reports on politicians considering the recognition of a new crime in Germany: displaying the flag of Hamas. Hamas is, after all, „recognized as a terrorist organization“ by various national agencies.

I am reminded of the Haus der Geschichte der Bundesrepublik Deutschland, where the RAF exhibit was filled with artifacts referring to political assassination but not a mention of Vietnam. Why bombings? Because Terrorists, Endpunkt.

Another outlawed flag:

This is the flag of the Kurdistan Workers‘ Party, the flag of students, union members, workers. The banning of this flag is cited by Armin Laschet as grounds for banning the Hamas flag.

As I read articles on the Hamas flag issue, whether in Spiegel, the Frankfurter Allgemeine, Süddeutsche Zeitung, wherever, advertising flashes on the screen to the right, above and below, advertising replete with corporate emblems, you might say the „flags of capitalist organizations“.
